What causes foot pain?

Each foot is made up of 26 bones and over 33 small joints, which work together with ligaments, muscles and tendons to create an amazing masterpiece of engineering. These joints create a structure that can be both stable (to generate force and power), yet also flexible and adaptive to its environment (to cope with uneven ground).
Due to its complexity, there are many causes of foot pain:
- Poor fitting shoes or sudden change in footwear
- Change in activity or training volume/type
- Overweight
- Trauma or injury
- Arthritis
It is important to understand that no two feet are the same, so each person’s condition must be assessed and treated based on their individual circumstances.
Commonly treated conditions include
- Plantar heel pain (commonly called ‘plantar fasciitis’)
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Morton’s neuroma
- Arthritis affecting the small joints of the foot and toes
- Ankle sprains
